HawtApps recently spoke with Subatomic Studios, the developers behind Fieldrunners. They answered our questions about their application for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
When did you start developing apps for the iPhone?
“This is our first App for the iPhone and Apple.”
How many copies of Fieldrunners have you sold within the first 2 nights of release?
“Fieldrunners has been getting a lot of support from the community and our reviewers lately, which inspires us to return great updates in the future.”
How did you like the developer tools provided in the iPhone SDK? Did you think there was there anything missing from it that you needed?
“The iPhone SDK and tools are great and very easy to use. The only issues we had were related to the Certificates and Licensing for the mobile device.”
How did you come up with the price for Fieldrunners?
“The price was determined through feedback we received from our initial testers, as well as other prominent peers in the industry.”
How many people worked on Fieldrunners, and how long did it take to develop?
“We are a very small company that values and welcomes ideas from all of our team members, because we believe its the key to a great product. The Fieldrunners game lasted a bit longer than the average, since we payed great care to the its quality.”
Is Subatomic Studios planning on releasing anymore iPhone games?
“Subatomic Studio plans to work on supporting and improving the Fieldrunners game, at the moment. We are currently hard at work on our next update, and though we have other future prospects on the horizon, that is our primary focus.”
What inspired you to make Fieldrunners?
“Our team consists of members with proven RTS development experience and these qualifications, along with our love of all strategy based games, inspired the development of Fieldrunners.”
I know you are planning on having a few big updates, but will any of them contain a Multiplayer mode?
“At this time we can not disclose any exact details about the Updates and future plans. Our upcoming press release will include some details and we promise our fans will not be disapointed!”
Although it’s only been two days since its release, are you happy with the sales of Fieldrunners so far?
“We’ve received a lot of support and positive reviews so far! We hope that people keep enjoying the word… we are a small company, and anytime someone supports us by buying Fieldrunners, they help us keep working on it!”

“It took a couple of months, from deciding to work on the game for the iPhone till it was released on the App Store, which I think is pretty fast. Although I did have a version previously working on the PC, which I had never released, so the gameplay had already been somewhat designed+tuned already.”
2. Are you planning on making any other apps?
“Yeah, I’m already working on a new one - another puzzle game, but more of a thinking game than Fuzzle, with a set of puzzles of varying difficulty that the users solves one at a time.”
3. Do you have any major updates coming out?
“Definitely. Global high-scores is something thats coming out soon - a lot of users have requested this feature, and we’ve been working on it for a while, but wanted to test it a lot before releasing. And also in the next update we’ll be allowing a limited number of undos per game, so if you accidentally make a bad move you can fix your mistake (and if you don’t make such mistakes, you can use the undos at just the right moment when you get really unlucky with where a ball arrives, so they add to the strategy of the game).
Longer term we also have plans to continue improving a lot of things, based on user feedback and some more ideas we have for making the gameplay more versatile etc.”
4. How many people have downloaded Fuzzle?
“Well when it was available for free we had 120,000 downloads in just three days. We get less when we are charging for it obviously.”
5. How many downloads do you get a day?
“Well Fuzzle hasn’t been out for so long, and with switching from free to paid, and adding the Lite version, and gaining publicity etc, the download count isn’t steady yet, so can’t reveal any useful figures for you there sorry.”
6. What is your most popular request?
“Well most of the requests we’ve already fixed in updates or are fixing in the next update - allowing music to continue playing when starting the game, having the option to move the balls with two separate taps rather than drag-drop, having timer-free game modes, making the easy mode easier etc. One thing that was surprising was the number of users that requested colorblind support, however so far they have all been satisfied once we explain that the orientation of the F-symbols on the balls can be used to differentiate between different colors.
Of course, some users complain (i.e. regarding colorblind support) by simply writing bad reviews, in which case we are unable to contact+help them, which can be frustrating when we could otherwise easily help them resolve their problem.
In any case, we really welcome any user feedback, and appreciate all of the great feedback that we’ve received so far. Its really great to hear from users that love the game - it makes our work feel really worthwhile.”
7. What is your high score on Fuzzle?
“In the easy mode I once got 2,604 … but the hard mode is for me more interesting, and in this mode my top is currently 1,248. It will be really interesting once the global high-scores are out to see what kind of scores our users are getting.”
8. What is your favorite app besides Fuzzle?
“I guess the game I’ve played the most besides Fuzzle is Apple’s own Texas Hold ‘Em app - I found it really addictive for a while. There’s a lot of great games out there I’m sure, I wish I had more time to try them all.”
9. How many people work for Candy Cane?
“At the moment we are 4 people. Two developers, one designer and one person responsible for the marketing and all the bureaucratic stuff.”
10. Why did you put Fuzzle on the app store for free for the first few weeks?
“We gave it away for free to get usersplaying it and talking about it. The App Store is setup in such a way that an app which isn’t on the front page can get lost amongst the thousands of other apps, and while the apps on the front page are all making quite nice amounts of money, most of the ‘hidden’ apps I believe make very little.
So we needed some way to get a bit of press+exposure, and providing it for free achieved this for us and was thus worthwhile, as it jumped into the top 10 free apps in just three days. Now we have also recently released a Fuzzle Lite version which hopefully also gives a lot more users a taste of the game without them having to first give us any money.
One thing that happened when we switched from free to paid is that Fuzzle jumped to the number one selling paid app, until Apple removed it from the top a couple of hours later. I think there’s still some things Apple needs to sort out here, because a lot of applications have done this switch, and while ours was removed from the top almost instantly, some others - both prior to, and after, our switch - were allowed to remain at the top for days. So it’s a bit like a lottery. The apps that make the front page - the top apps, the what’s hot and what’s new etc - can receive 10-100x as many purchases as the rest, and the current system for putting apps on the front of the App Store is untransparent, and largely up to Apple’s whims.
But anyway, with the Lite version out, Fuzzle is selling nicely, and now we’re just focusing on making further improvements to Fuzzle, and our next release, which we hope you will enjoy as much as Fuzzle :).”
11. How did you come up with your idea for Fuzzle?
“The idea of moving colored balls to get five in a row isn’t ours - this has been around for quite a while in various implementations. We came up with the idea of adding the rainbow and bomb balls, as we felt they really add to the gameplay. And also we tuned the gameplay a lot, adapting the number of squares to fit the iPhone’s screen, varying the number of different colored balls and adding a timer which slowly gets faster etc, with the aim being to make the various game modes get slowly harder so, sort of like Tetris gets faster with each level, the game gets slowly harder and doesn’t just last forever. But we also provide ‘clockless’ game-modes for users that don’t want the time pressure. So we try to cover for all user’s tastes, and are always listening to user feedback so that we can further improve Fuzzle. A recent reviewer mentioned that his six year-old daughter likes the game but finds it a bit difficult at times, so a super-easy ‘kid’ mode is something we’re looking into for example :)”
There you have it! Directly from the company!

Today, I was lucky to get an interview with Sarah Thomson from IUGO Mobile Entertainment. The developers of the all-too popular Toy Bot Diaries!
Enjoy!
1.) How big is the company IUGO?
“IUGO currently is 30 people strong. We started off 5 years ago with only 2 employees. We are growing organically which makes us very stable and agile. We are all located in Vancouver, BC. Everything is done in house; design, art, and development.”
2.) How did you come up with the idea for Toy Bot Diaries?
“The brains behind TBD (and most of our games) is Kyle Maglio, our lead designer. He and one of our artists Eric Poulton conceptualized TBD. They did a great job, didn’t they? We have very creative and talented people here at IUGO.”
3.) How did you come up with the idea for Shaky Summit?
“Once again this is a Kyle original. Shaky Summit has been an idea floating around here for some time. It started off as a demo on BREW handsets. The iPhone App Store Model has allowed us to take a few of our ideas we had on the backburner and realize their potential. We’ve been happy to create games in a range of genres; we’re quite versatile.”
4.) Can you tell us about how many times Toy Bot Diaries has been downloaded?
“We are currently not releasing this information.”
5.) How long have most people at IUGO been developing?
“Many of our staff members have been with us for at least 2-3 years. Those that have been with us for some time have honed much experience in mobile development.”
6.) Are you proud of how much success Toy Bot Diaries has had?
“Absolutely! TBD has exceeded our expectations. We always knew Toy Bot was a great little game for the iPhone, but it’s a whole other sense of reward and pride when users and experts in the industry recognize it. iPhone owners email us constantly asking when TBD 2 is coming out! FYI, it’ll be coming out later this fall…”
7.) How long did it take to develop Toy Bot Diaries and Shaky Summit, and how many people?
“TBD took about 2 months to develop. We had a varying amount of people on the project at different times throughout its cycle. Summit took about the same; 2 months.”
8.) Do you plan on releasing anymore games for the iPhone / iPod Touch?
“Yes, we have a great lineup of iPhone games coming! As mentioned, TBD 2 will be released later this fall and TBD 3 will be out around Christmas. We have another mini game in the works that will be launched this fall. Then of course there’s the epic Re-Volt. This flagship game will be available early 2009. That’s all I have on my list for now, be sure to watch out for updates on new iPhone apps from IUGO.”
IUGO Mobile Entertainment is an amazing company at making iPhone / iPod Touch applications.

Alright, so. My iPhone 3G has the firmware 2.1 installed, which is supposed to increase battery lifetime significantly. Today, I went on an eight and a half hour drive to Ohio. My phone died after 4 hours of usage. 3G wasn’t even on. The usage included listening to music and playing Trism. Not too good, eh?
Apple really needs to fix this. Feel free to post comments on how long your battery lasts.
